Ice Pack

Ice Pack

Definition: The local application of cold over a covered body segment.

The application of cold will prevent much swelling and will lessen black and blue discoloration, which is due to rupturing of the blood vessels.

The ice pack will cause a contraction of the blood vessels slowing down the oozing of blood into the injured tissues. It also relieves pain.

Procedure:

1. A heavy wool flannel cloth should be used, (12 x 12 for knees and shoulders and 8 x 9 for elbows and ankles).

2. Spread a Turkish towel out on a flat surface and spread finely crushed ice on the towel to make a 1 inch layer. Fold the towel and pin it together securely. Make sure the towel is long enough to cover the area to be treated.

3. Place the flannel over the area to be treated, then place the ice pack on the flannel. Cover the ice pack with a towel or plastic wrap to keep it in place.

4. Continue the application for 30 minutes.

5. Remove the ice pack and dry the area carefully. Then cover or bandage the area to avoid chilling the patient.

6. Be sure to observe the reaction to the treatment.
