In our local church we are about to start a supportgroup/prayergroup for overweight men. We call it from Daniels friends. The setup is for overweight men to help eachother achieve a healthier lifestyle, resulting in a healthier body, mind and spirit, just like Daniel and his friends in Dan. 1. The group consists of middleaged men (31 - 56) ranging from (106-135kg). We all have tried many times to change our lifestyle.
We are going to have an holistic approach using the NEW START philosophy. All of us spent most of the day sitting in an office, workplace or in a car and have to eat on the job. We want to meet once in the two weeks. Setup a personal healthplan and support eachother in reaching our goal. If possible form couples to go to the gym together. Coming sabbath we will have our kick-off meeting where we will measure our MBI, waistline, bloodpressure and start setting up a plan for ourselves that will work.
In order to be succesfull we are hoping that you can help us and provide us with professional advice. For example do you advice drastic change or to grow into a healthier lifestyle. Also we would appreciate it very much if you have guidelines or material to setup a good plan for our supportgroup. Do you allready support these type of groups online?
Looking forward to your reply,
Silvanico

Silvanico,
We do a total change from the beginning. I know there are various schools of thought. We have found our best success going "cold turkey".
We are experimenting with the best way to follow up. Our web site here is a good example. We do our follow-up with individual phone calls. We will try to help you however we can.
Blessings,

Hi Silvanico,
One thing we are trying to do with this community on the web at bhhec.org is actually something similar to a support group. This forum is a great place to come to interact with others trying to do the same thing. Also we are putting articles on this site that will be useful for groups such as yours. We welcome your suggestions as to what you would like to see in the future as this is really in its infant stages and we hope to grow it to be a powerful force for good online.
I am currently in the middle of putting all of the information that is in the syllabus we give to guests online here in the form of articles. So far I have managed to enter the sections on water and air. There is still much to do. I hope you find these informative and helpful for your group.
I would encourage you to have each of your group members register as members of this web community as well.
Congratulations on taking action in your church!
God Bless,
Jack

Silvanio: We are glad to see you and your church taking positive action in encouraging one another to make important lifestyle changes. A few months ago, a close friend of mine who is an elder in his church, received a note from a fellow member of the church. In the note, this man chastised my friend for standing up front and proclaiming the Word and yet demonstrating a personal lack of obedience and self-control as admonished by the Lord. Of course, initially my friend was very upset. He handed the note to his wife, who immediately began praying as she read it. By the time, they arrived home my friend felt chastised by the LORD and accepted this brother as being used by God to open his eyes to his own hypocrisy. Both he and his wife have attended some health classes at wchurch (sort of a modified CHIP program) and have drastically changed their eating habits. They have both lost weight and are on their way to a healthier life.
So many of us are busy eating ourselves to death. It is sad isn't it? We must run to Jesus and ask Him to change our thinking, our habits and pour His grace and love into our hearts.
We will be praying for you and your group. I think Jack's suggestion that you all join this community is a good one. We all need to encourage one another. God bless, Janet
